Below is a short bio of each person running in the upcoming FMA executive election. Please register for the site before March 6, 2011 in order to vote for your favorite exec between March 7 - 11, 2011.
Name: William Nichols
Program: Btech – Accounting
Running for: President
Why run?:
As VP of Finance & Admin, over the past year I have gained a wealth of knowledge about all facets of the club and its activities. I helped re-design the club’s website and re-vamp its footprint in social media which has directly resulted in more awareness of the FMA. I want to continue the efforts that this year’s team has put into the club and hopefully continue to increase membership and awareness. Finally, I want to develop a standard of excellence for the club and its members.
Why are you suitable for the position?
As mentioned above, I have served as an executive for the club and understand its procedures. I also have the connection with the FMA’s industry contacts, having met many through the course of the past year. This makes communication much easier as industry reps are familiar with who I am. I also feel that the experience that I have with the FMA will be extremely beneficial to the new executive team in event planning for the 2011/2012 school year. Finally, I feel that I still have more to offer the club, as well as the students of BCIT.
Name: Gurleen Kaur
Program: BBA
Running for: VP of External Communication
Why run?
As the VP External, I will continue to cherish and foster these relationships and provide opportunities for Financial Management students. I have noticed however, students of FMGT are not always aware of the resources the FMA provides, this is an area we as the new executive team will work on to improve with strong initiatives. FMA is for the students and as a student I believe more networking events, information sessions, and social gatherings make any educational experience valuable.
Why are you suitable for the position?
I have had the privilege of being involved with the FMA for the last three years - as a member during the 1st and 3rd year and held an executive position as the VP Internal during the 2nd year. This experience can be a great asset for the FMA. After watching the FMA under different kinds of leadership authorities I understand what areas of the FMA excel and which areas can be improved. For example, one of our greatest accomplishments is our relationships with industry professionals and associations. Vote Gurleen Kaur for VP External of FMA.
Name: Jonathan Fulcher
Program: 2nd Year Financial Management - Advanced Accounting Option, BBA Candidate
Running for: VP Finance & Administration
Why run?
My goal as a part of the new executive team will be to sustain the professional image the FMA has established and to continue to produce quality events and information sessions for the benefit of Financial Management students. By having the opportunity of two previous executive members being on the new executive team, I believe we can be a lot more efficient and devote more time to other concerns.
One concern in particular is to have more student involvement in and recognition of the FMA. This begins with extensive marketing to first year students during orientation day and the first few weeks of school. With increased involvement the goal is to hold meetings frequently and create more ways for students to volunteer for the FMA.
Why are you suitable for the position?
In addition to the goal of promoting and expanding the FMA, I believe I will excel in the position of VP of Finance and Administration. Being an accounting student, and having worked in an accounting position, I understand the importance of being well organized and detail oriented. This position also plays a crucial role of keeping members updated with current events via the FMA website and social media, something I believe is critical to increased student involvement.
I also understand the importance of not only implementing change in the FMA, but doing so in a way that allows future student to easily continue what we have created. Two projects I am involved in that I plan to be a part of again next year are FMA’s Save it Forward, as well as the new Free Tax Return service. Both of these projects add value to the FMA as well as help promote its name.
Name: Joy Lin
Program: Financial Management (Year 1)
Running for: VP Internal Communication
Why run?
I studied Communication as part of my undergraduate years from Simon Fraser University before coming to BCIT. I also served as an active executive member in SFU’s Canadianized Asian Club and Marketing Association. In addition, working at the bank as a customer service representative for the last three and half years has helped me to understand people better, especially when it comes to resolving their issues under difficult circumstances. I genuinely enjoy volunteering and participating in school club activities. And I believe I can make a difference for the students in FMA in the next few years.
Why are you suitable for the position?
I believe I am a perfect candidate for the position because I have many years of volunteering and working experience. As a person, I am very honest, enthusiastic and hardworking. I love making positive impact on other people and create better changes in their lives.
Name: Toni Lyle
Program: 2nd Year Financial Management – Tax Option, BBA Candidate
Running for: VP of Internal Communication
Why run?:
I still remember what it was like to be a 1st year at BCIT. Between the heavy course load, the group projects and work, I ended up missing out on everything the school clubs had to offer. It was months before I really knew what the FMA even did!
This year, I want things to change. I don’t want students to miss out on the benefits of FMA like I did simply because they are unaware of all the opportunities we have to offer. I want to break down the communication barriers and be able to provide students with the information they need. I don’t want to have to force students to seek us out, instead I want to us to take the initiative and reach out to them first.
We can begin by sending more consistent, interactive emails to update members on the club’s activities. Secondly, creating a ‘volunteer opportunities’ page on the website will let students know how they can actively contribute to the club. Thirdly, hosting general meetings open to all students which outline the progress of the club’s current events and projects would both spread awareness and build team unity. When it comes down to the wire, that’s all this position is about: building a strong relationship between the FMA and the student body at large.
Why are you suitable for the position?:
I believe in the value of the FMA. The club is about students helping fellow students in a real and impactful way, and that is something I am proud to be part of. Currently, I am involved in two brand-new FMA backed projects: Save It Forward and Free Tax Returns service. I hope to use my experience this year to turn these into annual projects that can benefit students long after I’ve left this school. Additionally, I feel I communication skills, approachability, and organization skills required to be successful in this position. If you vote for me I know I can make a valuable addition to the FMA.
Name: Jingjing (Fiona) Shao
Program: Btech – Accounting
Running for: VP of Internal Communication
Why run?
I am excited to have this opportunity to help our FMA students. I am here to support our students’ education and facilitate industrial connections to open their careers. As a senior student and FMA member, it is my responsibility to bring benefits to our students.
Why am I suitable for the position?
I am informative, patient and efficient. When I was in the diploma program, I had a hard time choosing between the three accounting designations. My choice became clear after studying accounting. It takes time to understand yourself and make the right decision. I offer my experience and designation knowledge to help you shorten the 3 year path that I went through. I am willing to answer your inquiries promptly. Secondly, I will book the meeting room and distribute the information clearly. You will not see “to be announced” for the room’s location. I will save you time, you do not need to check repeatedly. At last, I will work with other executives to create monthly group discount programs that benefit our FMA students.
Name: Ricky Dasgupta
Program: 2nd Year Financial Management - Advanced Accounting Option, BBA Candidate
Running for?: VP of Marketing & Team Development
Like most of you, I wasn’t actively involved with any clubs during my first year. In my second year, I finally forced myself to join a couple clubs and attend some events to spruce up my resume. Once I got involved, I realized just what I was missing out on. Over the past year, I have met many amazing people from all the different schools of business within BCIT as well as the industry. Along the way, I have also gained real world skills that books can’t teach you. This has helped shape me into a well rounded person.
As the VP of Marketing and Team Development, my job will be to help you reap the benefits of being part of FMA. The FMA will be actively recruiting and promoting to BCIT business students, primarily 1st years who could go on to fill in leadership roles within the club.
A dedicated support team is essential to the success of the FMA. You, as a member of the team, will fill in the most important roles in organizing FMA events. This is the best opportunity to showcase your work and skill set to potential employers while simultaneously helping your fellow students.
We will be partnering up with other BCIT clubs such as Finance Association (FA), Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), Marketing Association (MA) to provide more social events. The bottom line is we want to increase our presence and get everyone excited about being part of the FMA.
Why are you suitable for the position?:
I have the communication skills, leadership qualities and above all the personality to be successful in this position. I have served as the Set Rep for two semesters effectively communicating the needs of my set to the faculty. I am also involved in recruiting for Mindworks (SIFE project), planning events for Leaders of Tomorrow (Mentorship Program) and coordinating for a Free Tax Returns Service. This new service will be provided by the FMA with the collaboration of the CRA. Toni Lyle (running for VP of Internal) and Jonathan Fulcher (running for VP of Finance) are integral members of this project. Attending Vancouver Board of Trade sponsored events has provided me with industry contacts that are potential partners for the FMA.
Vote for me! Please and thank you.
Name: Daniel Huh
Program: 1st Year Financial Management
Running for: VP of Marketing & Team Development
Why run?:
I believe the info sessions and the events put on by the FMA are the best ways students can be better informed about their career paths and provide great grounds for questions that can’t be answered better anywhere else. Unfortunately many students are missing out because they have no idea the FMA exists. Therefore I want do my best to inform students about what they’re missing out on.
Why are you suitable for the position?
This being a new position and team, I think the most important factor for success is going to be how well the team members can work together. I believe I can be a great teammate with good problem solving skills that can help the team reach our goals in successfully spreading the FMA word.
Name: Eman Johal
Program: 1st Year Financial Management
Running for: VP of Marketing & Team Development
Why run?:
As a student at BCIT, I feel as if a lot of the students do not know what the FMA is, what it does, and how it can help them. Student's are not aware of the resources and information the FMA provides, and how important it is not only for their education, but for their future careers. As VP of Marketing & Team Development, I would make sure that all business students are aware of the FMA and why it is important to not only be apart of the club, but to participate in their various events.
Why are you suitable for the position?
As a student at BCIT, I know what student's here think of clubs and why they are reluctant to join. I know that if I was given the opportunity to convey the benefits of the FMA, I could gain student interest, increase awareness, and recruit new members. After meeting so many people in just a few months time, I know that there are many people who would like more information and guidance when it comes to education and career goals. I have the ability to communicate the importance of the FMA and to convince students to participate in the FMA's events.
